In the Memoirs of Sojourner-Truth, we find information at the bottom of the page; part of this note reads, quote. ‘We discover that Mrs. Laisdell, the daughter of Matthias, was bathed or washed, previous to her ceremonious union with Mr. B. Folger; this washing was performed by some of the females in the kingdom, but it was done expressly in preparation for the union.’ (Ref:H21) From this and other similar statements, the washing of the body is part of a religious ceremony for Matthias and his disciples. Several newspapers report male and female disciples stripping naked, before engaging in a ritual washing ceremony several times a week. According to the papers, Matthias would first wash his body then turn his attention to his disciples, who stood naked around the boiler stove. In their attempt to convey information, the newspapers contain many such examples of what could be called Penny Press articles. Astonishingly these articles are salaciously reporting intimate details, concentrating on the nudity and washing activities within the walls of Mount Zion!
